Fox faces and easy heads — References 1–5
If the face starts looking like a cat, check two things before adding detail: the muzzle is usually more projected and the ears sit tall and sharply above the head. The eye-mask marking can help, but it should not be doing all the work.
Sitting and cute foxes — References 6–12
For a sitting fox, think of the body as a narrow chest widening into the hips. Keep the front legs relatively straight and let the tail carry a lot of the silhouette. A fox tail should feel like a large soft mass, not a thin line with fur added afterward.
Use chest fluff sparingly. A few larger breaks in the contour work better than a row of identical zigzags.
Sketch and arctic-fox studies — References 13–16
The arctic-fox reference is a useful reminder that markings and color are not what make the animal read as a fox. The underlying muzzle, ears and body proportions still have to carry the identification.
Final outline studies — References 17–18
If your fox still looks wrong
- Looks like a cat: project the muzzle more and check the ear height.
- Looks like a dog: sharpen the face wedge and make the tail larger relative to the body.
- Tail feels pasted on: connect it to the hip mass before drawing the fluffy outer edge.
- Too furry: remove most interior fur marks and keep texture mainly at contour changes.
