How to study a fan-art reference

1. Block in the head, shoulders and main pose with simple shapes.
2. Check the angle and proportions before drawing facial features.
3. Choose one clothing or hair shape to simplify rather than tracing every line.
4. Compare your sketch with a licensed or official photo reference if accurate likeness matters.

Compare more than one reference

Do not let one fan-art image become your only source. Compare several interpretations of the same person, then check key proportions against an official or properly licensed photograph. This makes it easier to separate an artist’s stylization from the features you actually want to study.

When you browse other artists’ work, focus on decisions—simplified hair masses, clothing shapes, composition and value—not on reproducing the finished artwork line for line.

Practice pose and gesture separately

For pose practice, use a short timer and reduce the figure to head, torso, hip and limb directions before adding clothing. A 30–90 second gesture study is enough to capture movement. For portrait practice, work more slowly and compare eye line, jaw width, nose placement and the overall hair shape before adding small details.

A simple follow-up exercise

After studying one fan-art reference, close it and redraw the same pose from memory using only simple shapes. Then reopen the reference and compare the head angle, shoulder tilt and hand placement. The differences show you what you actually understood instead of what you merely copied.
