Parrots are a good subject when you want to use strong color without the page becoming hard to read. The single-bird pages are quick; the group scenes take longer because several feather palettes have to work together.
Start with the lightest feather color first, then add the stronger reds, blues or greens. Keeping the face or chest slightly lighter makes the wing and tail colors stand out. On realistic pages, colored pencils are easier than thick markers because you can layer color without covering the feather lines.
Match the palette to the page
- Single cartoon bird: use two or three bold colors and keep the background simple.
- Flying parrot: put the strongest contrast on the wings and tail.
- Family scene: repeat one shared color across the birds so the group still feels connected.
