A 90-second belly, scale and water test before you start
Before committing to a full reptile, test three small swatches in a margin or on scrap paper: a light belly tone, a medium body tone and one dark shadow. The belly and body should still look different when you squint. If they merge, lighten the belly rather than making the whole animal darker.
- Protect the face first. Leave the eye whites, teeth and the narrow area around the mouth uncolored while testing the body palette. These tiny light shapes disappear quickly under dark marker or heavy pencil.
- Test one scale row, not every scale. Add the dark tone to two or three connected scales along the back. If that reads as texture from arm’s length, stop there; outlining every scale usually makes a cartoon reptile look cluttered.
- Compare the reptile with the water. Put the medium body swatch beside the blue or blue-green you plan to use for water. If both are equally dark, lighten one of them so the silhouette stays obvious.
- Check the underside. Add one narrow dark shadow under the jaw or where a leg meets the body. If the animal suddenly looks more three-dimensional, you have enough contrast; there is no need to shade the entire belly.
Quick diagnosis: step back about an arm’s length. You should notice the eye and mouth first, then the body silhouette, then the scales. If the scales grab attention before the face, reduce their contrast. If the body disappears into plants or water, change the background value rather than piling more dark green onto the reptile.
For preschoolers, simplify this to two crayons: one light color for the belly and one stronger color for the back, leaving the teeth and eyes white. The point is separation, not realistic shading.
How to color a crocodile or alligator without making it one dark green shape
Start with the belly. Make it lighter than the back before you do anything else. Then use a medium olive, moss green, gray-green or muted brown over the top of the head, back and tail. Add the darkest color only where the legs meet the body, under the jaw and between a few scale rows. That small value change does more for the drawing than using five different greens.
You also do not need to color every scale individually. On highly simplified pages, a few darker patches along the spine suggest texture without making the page busy. On cartoon pages, there is no reason to stay natural at all—blue, yellow, purple or patterned scales work perfectly well.
Water and background colors matter more than you might expect
If the reptile is green and the plants are also green, the animal can disappear into the page. One easy fix is to keep the animal warm—olive or yellow-green—and use cooler blue-greens in the water or foliage. Another is to leave a thin white edge around the body instead of coloring right up against it.
A simple five-step coloring order
- Choose the body color and a lighter belly color.
- Color the eyes, mouth and teeth before the darkest scales.
- Add the main body tone.
- Use the darkest shade only in a few shadow areas.
- Finish the water, plants, stars or clouds last.
