If your dog drawings keep looking stiff, the problem is usually not the fur or the face—it is the underlying pose. Pick one of the references below and ignore the details for the first minute. Look only for the head, ribcage, pelvis and the line of the spine.

Pick the reference that matches what you want to practice

• Cute puppy: use a larger head, shorter muzzle and softer body shapes.
• Dachshund: pay attention to the long torso and where the short legs attach underneath it.
• Cartoon dog: simplify aggressively; a clear silhouette matters more than anatomy.
• Realistic sketch: compare angles and distances before you add fur texture.

A good first sketch can be surprisingly plain. Two or three body masses and a few directional lines are enough to tell you whether the pose works. Fix that stage before you commit to darker lines.

Get the breed proportions right before adding details

The same construction method should not produce the same body every time.
