The hardest thing is to get started

To learn how to draw pencil art, you just need to start. It is necessary to push yourself to pick up a pencil and begin to draw lines on a blank sheet of paper. Many people think that a blank sheet of paper is a problem that only a talented artist can handle.

As I already wrote in the previous articles about the types of drawings, you can draw as a line or a spot, and even combine them. If with a line everything is more or less clear, then with a tone it’s not quite and not always. In the classroom drawing class, we analyze in detail each step of the artist – where to start drawing, how to tone, in which cases it is better to use hatching or shading, and so on.

But I get a lot of questions from aspiring artists on this topic, so once again I will describe everything here. So what is tonality in a drawing and how to use it?

Light, medium, dark.

The tone in the drawing may be different, depending on the task. If, for example, the artist’s goal is to convey in the drawing the general tonal state of the model, then the tone can be gray or dark. To convey the forms and position in the space of objects, you can choose a light tonality, etc.

In general, drawings are light, with slight pressure on the pencil – in such works, the scale of tones used is not large and shifts to soft light shades. In such drawings, in addition to the tone, a line can also be used, but usually, they are low-contrast, highlighted, devoid of hard strokes and textures. Sometimes they are called a high key (a portrait in light key – the term is taken from the art of photography, and in recent years it has been widely used in the drawing).

Dark, saturated with tone patterns, in darkness are shifted to the dark part of the tonal scale. In them, artists actively use multidirectional strokes, textures, laconic flat dark spots and leave very few light shades to convey sharp contrasts, special expressiveness of shadows, the play of volumes, and flat black shadows on the model. Such work is called a low key.

The mid-tone drawings are the most contrasting. They combine both dark and light tones in their most harmonious ratio or line up in shades of the middle of the tonal scale.

For pencil art, it is better to determine in which tonal range it will be performed: light, medium, or dark. It will also not be superfluous to pre-plan the arrangement of the main tonal spots in the sheet. To do this, make a small tonal sketch of future work. Looking at it, it will be possible to draw bolder in the sheet format, and control the tone quality in the drawing, and boldly experiment with pencil textures – there will be something to check to avoid accidentally falling out of the general tonal structure and the main idea.

With this method, all shadows are first shaded – both their own on the objects and falling from the objects. Hatching is carried out either in shape from the border of light and shadow, or simply flat, to indicate the quality of lighting and deal with the main masses of tonal spots. The tonal difference between own and falling shadows is shown immediately, so as not to get confused in the basic relationships.
